How to Install LED Light Strip in a Car?

Adding LED strips to a car’s interior gives it a futuristic and stylish look. And if you are planning on doing it, we have good news! The installation process of LED strips in your car is straightforward. So even with minimum experience, you can do it yourself.

Here, we will provide crucial information on the installation process as well as answer questions like which LED you should get and where you can install them. Let’s jump in!

Things You Will Need

Here are the things you may need during the installation process:

  • LED strip: When picking LED strips, there are multiple 12V options available. By far, my favorite ones are the SUNNEST and the OPT7 sets.
  • Glue or 3M tape: Even though most LED strips have a sticky surface on the back, extra adhesive may be required. Get a powerful glue or 3M tape for an easier installation.

Installation Process for the Interior of the Car

Before starting the installation, make sure to test the LEDs. Plug them into a power source. Then, test out the controller and see if it works properly. Moreover, if the lights can be controlled via your phone, check out if that’s working. After this, let’s start the process of installation!

Step 1: Find Out Where You Want to Install the LEDs

There are a few great spots you can install your lights to have an excellent interior look. These are the best places to set up LED strips:

  • Under the dashboard
  • Under the seats
  • Beneath the car doors

If you plan to install the lights underneath the seats, we recommend doing it under the front seats. You can get them set up either on the front or back of the seats.

Step 2: Clean the Spot

Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean the spots you picked for the LED installation. Using alcohol cleaner can quickly get rid of the dust. After cleaning, wait for the place to fully dry before continuing with the next step.

Step 3: Power the Lights

Most LED strips can be powered by the USB port in your car or the lighter socket. This is an easy plug and play installation. However, if you are going to use the lights permanently, we recommend powering them directly from the fuse box. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Locate the fuse box. It’s usually on the lower-left area of the driver. Check your owner’s manual if you are unable to locate the interior fuse panel.
  • Cut the adapter and open the wires, revealing the metal.
  • Connect the 12V red wire to the ACC wiring connection in the fuse box and tape it afterwards.
  • Connect the ground wire (if it has any) with the stereo grounding wire.

Now your LEDs have a permanent power source without using any USB port or lighter socket.

Step 4: Attach the LEDs to the Surface

Most LED strips have a sticky surface when you remove the tape. It allows easier placement of the lights on an elevated surface. If your LED strips do not have that, you can use powerful glue or a 3M tape to stick the strips to the surface.

Step 5: Finish Up

There are many grooves around the car where you can stick the wiring so that your installation is clean. For example, you can attach the wires around the car’s flooring right on the mat’s border. Now, you are all done!

Final Note

Since 12V LED strips do not use a lot of energy, you can enjoy these lights without worrying about them putting a strain on the car’s battery or other electrical components. With proper wire management, the lights will look clean, and your vehicle will have a futuristic style whenever you drive at night.
