LED lights are an attractive feature add to your vehicle. They are brighter and longer-lasting than traditional lights but are cost-effective. But it is common for people to experience radio interference in their cars after installing these LED lights.
LED lights operate by a sequence of modulated energy. This determines the number of times the lights will flicker every second.
The electrical signals from the lights hinder the ability to receive AM/FM radio frequencies in vehicles. Other LED lights in the vicinity can also contribute to this issue. However, it is a common problem and can be fixed easily.
Using an AM Radio
You can use an AM radio wave to identify the source of the interference. The radio simply needs to be functional with full batteries.
- Select the radio station at the lower end of the dial.
- Make sure the selected station does not produce any sounds. Pick a station that doesn’t even create any static.

Changing the Transformers
Transformers can also emit electromagnetic radiation, which can impede radio signals. This is why you should consider replacing the transformers of the LED lights.
Using EMI-resistant transformers can alleviate this issue. It should be kept in mind that some LED lights have built-in transformers. This means you cannot change the transformers separately. In this case, you have to replace the entire LED light system. This method only works for low-voltage LED lights as lights with higher voltage do not contain replaceable transformers.
Applying Ferrite Cores
Ferrite cores serve as an EMI filter. You can wrap the ferrite cores around the wiring to reduce radio interference. But you have to do it individually on the wires depending on the number of the lights. These EMI filters reduce electrical frequencies.
Ferrite cores become necessary when you are using cheap LED lights. Installing ferrite cores could require help from professionals. They are also commonly known as ferrite chokes and are generally sold online.
Using Different Wiring
The wiring plays a very subtle role when it comes to radio interferences. It is a proven fact that longer wires are more likely to tamper with radio signals. So you should try using shorter wires. Insulated wires can also be useful in this regard.
